Visitors on Catalina Island
Why travel far for an island getaway when paradise is just a short boat ride away?
Located just 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles, Catalina Island - with its Mediterranean charm and myriad of activities - offers a tranquil vacation spot. The weather on the island is beautiful, with perfect blue skies, soft sea breezes, and crystal clear water. Whether you want a few days to relax and escape from the stresses of the mainland, or are looking for a getaway packed with adventure and fun, Catalina Island is the ideal place to visit.
Catalina has never been easier to get to. You can be on the island in as little as 15 minutes by helicopter or in one hour by boat. Helicopter service is available from Long Beach and San Pedro. Two boat companies serve Catalina Island with departures from Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point or Newport Beach.
Avalon, Catalina Island's only city, offers a large selection of lodging from charming beachfront hotels to historic bed and breakfast inns, from small family-run establishments to luxurious penthouses. Many of the accommodation choices have romantic in-room amenities such as fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs, private balconies and ocean views.
Catalina is unique for its lack of automobiles. Avalon is the only city in California authorized by the State Legislature to regulate the number and size of vehicles. Consequently, everyone drives golf carts. And you can too! It's one of the most popular activities on the island.
If you don't want to drive a golf cart, the main downtown district of Avalon is easy to navigate on foot and walking is a wonderful way to explore this safe and charming town. Stroll along the picturesque waterfront and visit Avalon's quaint shops and
restaurants.
Take in the legendary Casino Building, standing 12 stories tall and surrounded by the sea on three sides. The Casino isn't a gambling hall at all, but an Italian word for "a place of entertainment". The beautiful landmark played host to dozens of big bands through the 1930's and 1940's. The Casino is now home to the Catalina Island Museum and tours of the beautiful building are offered on a daily basis.
If you desire to be more active, there are plenty of experiences to participate in, including horseback riding, hiking, golf, bicycling and a variety of tours to the interior of the island. While you are in Avalon, also take time to enjoy all the water activities Catalina is famous for: snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, taking a tour in a semi submersible or glass bottom boat, or just spending a relaxing day at the beach.
